Free Crochet Bobble Ear Warmer Pattern

I love wearing ear warmers! They are so comfy and don’t seem to mess up my hair as much as a beanie does. Plus I love crocheting ear warmers because they are quick and easy crochet projects. This free crochet ear warmer pattern is a great way to keep your ears warm and to look cute at the same time.

This pattern has been so much fun to design. One of my favorite stitches is the herringbone half double crochet stitch and now I have discovered the herringbone double crochet stitch. I just love the look of the herringbone stitches. They have a slight texture and slant to them that gives your crochet project a nice, classy look.

Don’t let the fancy names for these stitches intimidate you. They are really easy stitches to master because they are just slight variations of the original half double and double crochet stitches.

I have some quick video tutorials for visual learners like myself.

These ear warmers would be a great addition to your Etsy Shop or to make as gifts.

NOTES

This pattern uses American Standard Terms.

My adult-sized ear warmer measures about 4 inches wide and 19.5 inches long.

You can easily adjust this ear warmer to fit any size you need. Just be sure to chain an odd number and to measure as you go. My Headband Sizing Chart will help you with sizing.

I have a video tutorial for how to make this ear warmer here. I also have video tutorials for finishing the ear warmer to give it the twisted look or the X (criss-cross) look.

I love how versatile this ear warmer pattern is. You can use any weight yarn to make it. Just be sure to measure as you work the pattern so you can get the right size.

I crochet very tightly so you may need to adjust the number of chains and/or the number of rows for your ear warmer. I highly recommend having a measuring tape or an acrylic ruler handy.

The HHDC and the HBDC abbreviations look very similar so I be careful not to get them mixed up in the pattern.

Continue to repeat rows 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 (in that order) until you are 1.5 inches from your desired length, then work rows 7-11 again.  (For an adult-sized ear warmer it took me a total of 47 rows to reach 19.5”.)

Fasten off.  Leave a long tail. Do NOT weave in just yet.  You will use your long tail to give the ear warmer a twisted or an X look.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Bobble Stitch
(BO)

Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook, *yarn over, go back into the same stitch, yarn over pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops*, Repeat from *to* 3 more times. You will have 6 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through the first 5 loops, you will have 2 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through those 2 loops to finish your bobble stitch. Essentially, you are placing 5 double crochet decreases in the same stitch.
