How to Foundation Single Crochet Stitch (FCS)
The pink yarn is the traditional way to start your work. It is the starting chain and the first row of stitches. For the dark purple yarn, I used the foundation stitch to start my work and worked row 2.
To work a foundation single crochet stitch, all you have to chain is just 2.
Then, you will go back into the first chain you made. Be sure to go through both of the loops; yarn over (grab some yarn) and pull it back through both of the loops. Be sure to push the yarn down the shank of your crochet hook and not just use the tip – this will keep your stitches from being too tight.
You will now have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and go through the first loop only – this forms your chain stitch.
Now you will have 2 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through both of the loops – this forms your single crochet for row 1.
This is what your work will look like. To your left is the foundation chain and to your right is the single crochet of your first row.
Now let me show you where to place your hook to go onto the next stitch.
To find where to place the next stitch, turn your work and look for the V (shown here with a yellow marker). This is where you will put your hook – be sure to go through both loops.
This is what your work will look like now.
You have 2 foundation chains and 2 single crochets in your first row completed.
Continue working your stitches and when you are ready to go to your next row, chain 1, turn your work. Then, single crochet in the first stitch in that row – this will keep your edges nice and straight.
