If you love to crochet and have a green thumb or house plants, then you are going to love this weeks free pattern, the Giliane Plant Cozy. I actually do not have a green thumb but I am working on it.

I suddenly went from having no indoor plants to having ten of them and I am resisting the urge to buy more. I blame this on my crochet friends and our group chat. They are all enablers and started getting house plants, so it gave me the excuse to get some too. Honestly though, I have been wanting to buy some for a while but I sadly I have trouble keeping them alive. I swear this time is going to be different. I either overwatered them or I forgot about them, so this time I took notes on each one and how much water they need.

I wanted the planters to fit in with my home decor without having to go shopping and purchase new ones, so I decided why not design some cute crocheted plant cozies for them. This way if I get sick of the color or want a change – all it takes is one crochet project!

Materials

H/5mm crochet hook (or size needed to meet gauge)
57 yards of worsted cotton yarn (I used Dishie from WeCrochet)
Measuring Tape
Tapestry Needle
Scissors
Stitch Markers

Abbreviations

CH: Chain
MR: Magic Ring
SC: Single Crochet
SC3TOG: Single Crochet 3 Together (single crochet decrease)
ST(S): Stitch(es)
TS: Trinity Stitch (see special stitch instructions)

Gauge

5 Trinity Stitches x 7 rows = 2 in x 2 in

Notes

This pattern uses American Standard Terms.
The chains at the beginning of each row do not count as a stitch.
I am a tight crocheter so be sure to use measurements or gauge swatch.
My finished plant cozy laid flat measures 4.75 inches tall (measured in the center of the work), 5.75 inches across the top, and 4 inches across the base.
This pattern is based on a planter bottom that is 3 inches in diameter.
To adjust this pattern to fit any size:
- Just measure the bottom of your planter and work the increase rounds until you reach that size.
- Then work one more increase round. Your last increase round needs to end with an odd number.
- Then, work Round 9 of the pattern until you reach your desired height.
Extra note on the Trinity Stitch: Because this pattern is worked in the round, we will be chaining 1 for the last Trinity Stitch in the round. When you work the Trinity Stitch in rows, you do not CH 1 to finish the trinity stitch when it’s the last one in the row; you would work a single crochet.

Special Stitch Instructions

Trinity Stitch (TS): The Trinity Stitch gathers 3 stitches together in a SC3TOG (single crochet three together). In this pattern, each round will start with a single crochet followed by Trinity Stitches. You will want to have loose tension when working your Trinity Stitch, especially the chain one.

To work a Trinity Stitch:

Insert your hook into the same stitch you just went into, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have 2 loops on your hook.
Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have 3 loops on your hook.
Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have 4 loops on your hook.
Yarn over, pull through all 4 loops, CH 1.

Round 1: 6SC in MR; SLST to 1st SC, CH 1 (6)

Round 2: 2SC in ea ST; SLST to 1st SC, CH 1 (12)

Round 3: SC in 1st ST, 2SC in next ST, *SC in next ST, 2 SC in next ST, repeat from * to finish round; SLST to 1st SC, CH 1 (18)

Round 4: SC in 1st ST, SC in next ST, 2SC in next ST, *SC in next 2 STS, 2SC, repeat from * to finish round; SLST to 1st SC, CH 1 (24)

Round 5: SC in 1st ST, SC in next 2 STS, 2SC in next ST, *SC in next 3 STS, 2SC in next ST, repeat from * to finish round (30)

Round 6: SC in 1st ST, SC in next 3 STS, 2SC in next ST, *SC in next 4 STS, 2SC in next ST, repeat from * to finish round (36)

Round 7: SC in 1st ST, SC in next 4 STS, 2SC in next ST, *SC in next 5 STS, 2SC in next ST, repeat from * to finish round (42) My cozy is 3 inches in diameter at this point.

Round 8: SC in 1st ST, SC in next 19 STS, 2SC in next ST, SC in next 21 STS, SLST to 1st SC, CH 1 (43) My cozy is 3.5 inches in diameter at this point.

Round 9: SC in 1st ST, TS in each remaining ST in round, SLST to first SC, CH 1 (43)

Round 10-Round 21: Repeat Round 9. My cozy is 4.75 inches tall after Round 21 (measured in the center of the work; continue repeating Round 9 if you want yours taller).
