Simple Cotton Crochet Washcloth
I designed a beginner friendly, simple cotton crochet washcloth to share with you. The simple cotton crochet washcloth is a quick and easy crochet project. The great thing about this crochet pattern is you can make your washcloths in any size.
Cotton washcloths are my favorite things to crochet. I love that they are quick, easy crochet projects that you can make any time of year. I love quick crochet projects because I can throw them in my purse and if I have to wait somewhere I can get some crocheting done.
My fondness for crochet washcloths goes back to my childhood. My Grandma Gertie used to make them all the time. I remember using them to wash dishes when I was a kid. Her tradition remains as that is all I use in my kitchen now. My aunt kept me supplied with them until I learned to crochet but I still have some of her really pretty ones that she made kept in my cedar chest. They were just too pretty to use.
For my crochet washcloths, I only use 100% cotton yarn for because I love the durability and the texture it gives them. I usually grab a ball of cotton yarn when I’m shopping at Walmart but, recently another crocheter recommended the brand I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby, so I gave it a try. Well, the brand name sure is perfect! I do love it! It is one of the most softest cotton yarns that I’ve worked with. I love that it glides off your hook. The I Love This Cotton brand also comes in some beautiful colors.
I honestly don’t know why this is my first time using this yarn because been using the Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn for all of my Sassy Beanie hats.
It’s definitely become one of my favorite brands to crochet with.
My normal crochet washcloth size is about 6.5” to “6.5”. I have small hands so I don’t like a big washcloth, but this pattern is adjustable so you can make whatever size you like to use.
Also, not sure how to foundation single crochet stitch? No problem – I have a video tutorial just for you!
MATERIALS:
1 ball of cotton yarn
(e.g. I Love This Yarn; Peaches and Creme, Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton);
H8/5mm crochet hook;
Scissors;
Tapestry needle
PATTERN:
FSC 30 (or any even number).
Row 1: ch 1, sc in 1st st, dc in next st, *sc in next st, dc in next st* repeat from *to* until you get to the last 2 sts in row; place a sc in ea of the last 2 sts.
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, sc in ea remaining st in row.
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, dc in next st *sc in next st, dc in next st* repeat from *to* until you get to the last 2 sts in row; place a sc in ea of the last 2 sts.
Row 4: repeat Row 2.
Row 5: repeat Row 3.
Keep alternating Row 2 & Row 3 until you reach your desired size.
I usually like to end with the single crochet row (Row 2) because it leaves your edges looking nice.

I love this. I always want to make fish clothes but never seem to get the correct size. Mine always are too big or too small. Now I can go crazy making some. Thank you!

Unashamed newbie here, I am just learning to crochet. What do the abbreviations mean? I’m really new at reading patterns/crochet. This is my first project.

Hey Misty! We have all been a beginner and I am so glad you are joining the world of crochet! It is such a lovely community! Here is my blog post about reading crochet patterns https://www.averylanecreations.com/2019/01/31/how-to-read-crochet-patterns/ there is an abbreviation chart in the post that you can screenshot or pin to your Pinterest board. How do you get your dish clothes to stay square? Mine often go crooked after a washing . Also love the Hobby Lobby I love this cotton yarn. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Nicky
Hey Bev! You may want to go up a hook size. I have this trouble with my cotton face rounds that I make. And I have realized that it is a tension issue. I went up a hook size and I haven’t had any trouble after that. I hope that works for you. You could also try just laying them flat to dry instead of throwing them in the washer. I hope these tips were helpful for you! 🙂

Thank you!!!

This is an easy project that fills my need to keep my hands busy while watching TV at night. The repetitive pattern didn’t require too much attention, yet resulted in an adorable little dishrag. I’m thrilled to have found this pattern! I completed one rag during two nights of tv watching (and popcorn eating 😆). I’m excited to be replacing my old, boring kitchen rags with these cute ones! Thank you!
