Free Crochet Pattern Bristol Cowl
I love to crochet cowls and if you follow me on social media you have probably noticed that I have been binge crocheting them for months now! I am excited to share my Bristol Cowl crochet pattern with you.
The Bristol Cowl is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern that uses simple stitches to create a lovely texture. It is stunning with a solid or tonal-colored yarn! And you won’t be disappointed using a variegated yarn either!
I used some of my super soft tweed yarn to design this pattern. It is a DK (#3) weight yarn. If you prefer to use worsted weight yarn, you can definitely do so!
The Bristol Cowl pattern is a versatile pattern so you can use any yarn weight and easily adjust it to make the size you want.
You can find the pattern to make your very own Bristol Cowl below.
If you want to use some of my ALC Yarns tweeds to make your Bristol Cowl, I have the kits available in my Yarn Shop. There are 5 spring colors to choose from and you can check them out here. You will receive a Ravelry coupon code for the free pattern PDF download with your order.

Notes
- This pattern uses American Standard Terms.
- I am a tight crocheter so be sure to use measurements or gauge swatch.
- You will chain 1 at the beginning of each round even the rounds that start with a double crochet stitch.
- When working into the chain stitch on Round 1, I prefer to work into the back bump of the stitch. This gives a nice clean look to the edge of your work.
- You will work in the same ST as your chain 1 for each round starting with round 2.
- My finished cowl laid flat measures 11.5 inches wide and 9 inches tall.
- You can easily adjust this pattern to use any yarn weight.
- Chain until you reach the desired length for your cowl.
- Be sure your starting chain is an even number.
- Work rounds 2 and 3 until you reach your desired height.
- If you are not sure what size you want your cowl, this is how I determine sizing for mine:
- Take a soft tape measure, measure where you want the cowl to lay. Make a note of circumference.
- Chain until your work measures about 0.5 inches longer than your measurement.
- Follow the pattern until you reach the height you want.
- Keep in mind when making adjustments to the pattern that this can affect the total yardage used.
Pattern:
Chain 90 (this is about 21 inches long for me) or chain an even number until you reach your desired length
Round 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook, DC in next ST, *SC, DC, repeat from * to finish round, SLST to first SC. Be sure your chain is not twisted before you SLST to join
Round 2: CH 1, *DC, SC, repeat from * to finish round, SLST to first DC to join
Round 3: CH 1, *SC, DC, repeat from* to finish round, SLST to first SC to join
Continue alternating rounds 2 and 3 until you reach 9 inches or your desired height. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
I seriously want to crochet a Bristol Cowl with every single yarn weight. I love the simple texture this pattern creates.
I love making Bristol Cowls with heavily variegated yarns too. It really makes all of the colors pop.
Here is a Bristol Cowl that I made with some bulky weight yarn.
I just love seeing all of the different colors show up as I am crocheting.
