What to Do When You Lose Your Crochet Motivation

Do you find yourself just not wanting to pick up your hook and crochet any type of project? You may be feeling unmotivated, unenthusiastic or just blah towards your crochet that use to bring you so much joy. Losing your crochet motivation or crojo happens to all of us a some point. I feel like when you are passionate about something it is just human nature to lose the luster here and there. It rarely happens to me now because I have started implementing a few tricks to keep me from getting bored. Boredom is the kyrptonite to my crojo.

They are a variety of reasons why we lose our motivation to crochet and it may be different for everyone, but I believe there are a few reasons we all have in common.

One of the main causes for me is saying yes to things I should be saying no to. You are probably shaking your head in agreement right now. Let’s face it, we all get excited when someone takes an interest in our crochet and asks us to make something for them. This can look different for all of us. Maybe you are constantly making things for free or just getting paid for the supplies or someone asks you to make something you’ve never made before and you are excited at first and quickly end up frustrated. I feel like we have all been in situations like that.

Another crochet motivation snatcher for me are long projects. I get an idea in my head that I want to make a blanket or a shawl and I’m excited for the first half of the project and quickly start to fade after that.

I also tend to go on crochet binges. If I make one beanie, I am going to make 20. It isn’t always the same pattern over and over again but I’m going to make beanies for weeks. I tend to do the same thing with crochet stitch combinations. I get obsessed with it and want to make everything with that combo.

Whatever the reasoning behind losing your crochet motivation may be I have some tips that will help you revive your crojo and help prevent you from losing it in the future.

10 Tips for Getting Your Crochet Motivation Back

  1. Make something just for you. It is easy to get caught up in crocheting items for other people whether you are fulfilling orders or making items to donate. All of that is great but you need to take some time to make something just for the love of it and so you can enjoy not only making something for yourself but using it too.
  2. Learn a new stitch. Search Google, Pinterest or YouTube for new crochet stitches to learn. I love textured crochet stitches so I will put that in the search bar and scroll until I find something that grabs my attention.
  3. Break up long projects with an item that you can make pretty quickly. Like a new dishcloth for your kitchen or a bulky weight project. I love bulky weight yarn for those almost instant gratification projects.

Try New Yarn...

4. Try a new yarn. It’s always fun to try new yarn. Head out to your favorite yarn store and see what they have that you haven’t tried before or find a new yarn shop online and try some hand dyed yarn on a new to you base or yarn weight.

5. Pick out some yarn in colors you are not normally drawn too. We are creatures of habit and tend to just go for the same thing over and over again. It may not be the same exact colors and they may vary a little but I would be willing to bet that if you looked at your yarn stash there is a pattern to the colors you have. (No judging! Mine is the same way!) Step out of your comfort zone and you just might change your mind about colors you normally avoid. If you know me, I already know what you are thinking and I’m not changing my mind about brown LOL.

Try a new pattern...

6. Try a new pattern.

Is there a project that you’ve been wanting to make but it intimidates you so you keep talking yourself out of it?

Or you keep telling yourself you just don’t have time for a project that is going to take extra concentration?

I used to do this all the time. I wanted to make a triangle cowl for the longest time but I told myself it was way too hard for me to even try. It’s so funny how we can make up our minds about something before we even try it. I did this for so long and now I make an effort to have at least one project in the works that will challenge me.

I have learned that a lot of the projects that intimidated me ended up not being that hard at all. Google and YouTube are such great resources for being able to learn almost anything!

7. Crochet an item to gift to someone special. There is no better feeling than crocheting an item and gifting it to someone.  We spend a lot of time and pour so much love into the things we crochet and it is so rewarding to see someone appreciate it.

8. Crochet an item to donate. There are so many great causes that greatly appreciate donations. I love to make cute little baby beanies for the NICU or beanies for cancer patients or blankets for dog rescue organizations; whatever causes are near and dear to your heart. When we can connect our crochet to a cause greater than ourselves, we can quickly find your passion in crocheting again.

If you’re not sure about where to donate, post in a crochet Facebook group or on your personal Facebook page or ask some crochet friends. You can also check with your local hospital, doctors offices, or churches. I am sure you will quickly discover a lot of options for donating locally or even in another state. If you would like to donate outside of your local area, you can also do a quick Google search for where to donate crochet items. There is always a need we can fill and it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. Just donating one hat will touch your life and the lucky receiver’s life. It’s often the little things that end up being the biggest blessings.

Take a break...

9. Take a break. I know those words may be hard to hear, but absence makes the heart grow fonder. You don’t have to ignore your yarn stash for weeks on end. You can always try your hand at knitting or some other fibeBr art. I taught myself to knit about 6 months ago and I quickly fell in love with it. My first love will always be crocheting but it is nice to have a change every now and then. When I’m knitting I’m thinking about crocheting. Plus it’s super nice to have a challenge and then go back to crocheting so I can feel smart again. LOL!

10. Learn to say “No.” This is still hard for me. I have finally learned the things that burn me out so quickly and now I say no to those things. I very rarely crochet items to sell or take custom orders.  A lot of times it was items I never made before and I would quickly lose my excitement because I put a lot of pressure on myself. It is a lot of pressure to crochet something for someone else on top of trying to learn a new technique or new stitch or to find the pattern for something that you just have a screenshot of. Most of the times we didn’t charge nearly enough either!

It’s not that I don’t still get excited when people reach out to me about making things for them, but I really have to check in with myself to see if this aligns with my goals right now. I have realized that when I say yes to one thing I am going to have to say no to something else. I want to make sure that I am saying yes to the right things.

Find your passion for crocheting again...

Whatever the reason is for losing your crochet motivation, giving these tips a try will get you back to loving crochet again no time. You don’t have to try them all but you can rotate through them whenever you feel your crojo losing it’s spark.
