Rhys Brimless Beanie Free Crochet Pattern
I know I can’t be the only one excited that beanie season is almost here. Beanies are still one of my favorite things to crochet. I seriously cannot stop making them once I start. I will binge make them for weeks!
I am sharing the Rhys Brimless Beanie Crochet Pattern with you today.
I love the way that the brimless beanies look even though I prefer to wear brimmed beanies. The brimless beanies have really grown on me.
If you are looking for a beanie with simple texture that will look great on men and women, the Rhys Beanie will do the trick. I also have a child size coming soon!
I know before I started designing patterns, it was really hard to find beanie patterns that would work for men. So at least once a year I try to design a unisex beanie. You can find the free crochet pattern for my Avery Brimless Beanie from last year here.
The Rhys Beanie is worked from the top down. If you have never made a top down beanie, don’t be intimidated! It is really simple and it is a lot easier to get the size right this way. As long as you have the crown diameter right, the rest of the beanie is easy peasy.
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. I used ALC Yarns and Lion Brand Heartland for the beanies that I made.
The men’s camo looking beanie is made with ALC Yarns in the color Just Before Fall. My husband claimed this beanie before I even finished it! This is the first beanie design that my husband is actually excited about. I think the camo looking color is what really sold him but I am excited either way.
Below you will find my Easy Guide to Sizing Crochet Hats along with the men’s size medium and women’s size medium crochet patterns. See the Notes section of the pattern for instructions on how to make one in any size.

Notes
- This pattern uses American Standard Terms.
- The chains at the beginning of each row do not count as a stitch.
- When you are working the repeat rounds, be sure to place your SC in the previous round’s SC and place your DC in the previous round’s DC. When starting a new round, I always work by first ST in the same ST as the CH 1. You do not have to do this, but be consistent with which ST you work your first ST for each round throughout the pattern.
- I am a tight crocheter so be sure to use measurements or gauge swatch. Gauge is really not important as long as you measure as you make your beanie.
- This beanie is worked from the top down and it is very simple to make the size you want. Using my Easy Guide to Sizing Crochet Hats you will:
- Find the size you are needing on the chart.
- Look under the column “Crown Diameter” to find the inches you will need for the increase rounds.
- Work the increased rounds in the pattern until you reach the crown diameter needed for the size you want to make.
- Once you reach the crown diameter size, you will refer to the chart again and find the “Hat Height” column.
- Work the repeat rounds until your hat measures about 0.5 inches from your desired height.
- Work the last two rounds of the pattern to get your hat to the desired height.

I knew I wanted to design this beanie with a solid colored yarn. It really shows off the simple texture. Once I finished the first beanie, I had to see it in a variegated yarn. The texture of the beanie really shows off the colors in variegated yarns. I feel like you can’t go wrong either way.
The brimless beanies have really grown on me. The Rhys Beanies simple textured design makes it great for men and women. Keep a look out for the child size that’s coming soon!
