My Favorite Crochet Tools
As a crocheter, I love my crochet hooks and yarn, but there are some other crochet tools that make me happy too. I feel that as I have grown as a crocheter that my crochet tools have grown as well. I am going to share with you my favorites.
One of my absolute favorite things is my utility cart. I love being able to keep all my crochet items near me and organized. Well, it’s not always organized but it makes it an easier task to get organized. There is nothing worse than finally sitting down to crochet and then realizing you don’t have what you need.
I keep a variety of yarns and hook sizes in my cart because I never know when I have an idea for a project.
I found this utility cart on Amazon. It comes in black, white and “blue” (it looks more teal to me). The baskets and hooks are removable so you can attach them anywhere you want to on the cart. It also comes with an optional tray divider that is perfect for cakes of yarn.
Let’s talk about scissors. I use embroidery scissors because they are super sharp and cut yarn with little effort. This keeps the yarn from splitting at the ends and making it hard to get into your needle. Also, they are so pretty and make a great prop in pictures. You can even fly with these! Yep, I take them on trips with me all the time. You can find them on Amazon.
When I first started crocheting, I refused to gauge swatch. I just didn’t want to take the time to do it. I wanted to jump right into crocheting and not waste time on boring tasks like gauge swatches. I am still not crazy about doing them but they save so much time and really help people who are following my pattern designs. The only gauge swatch rulers I own are from SHEinspired Designs. She made the little 2×2 gauge rulers for my December Yarn Club boxes and they are perfect size for your project bag.
Selfie sticks with a tripod base are a must! I use mine daily! I use them for everything- taking and watching videos; taking pictures; going live to chat with my yarn club members; zoom calls; and as a general phone holder. It makes it so much easier to find my phone.
Retractable tape measures are life! I probably have a half dozen of them! I have them everywhere- in my purse, in my project bag, on my desk, and in my utility cart. You can pick them up at any craft store in the sewing section and you can find them on Amazon.
Stitch markers are another favorite! They are so handy to use and save a lot of time. I always use them when I am crocheting in the round. I like to mark the first stitch in the round. I also like to use them to mark certain rows or rounds in a pattern so I don’t have to constantly start at row one when I am counting to see where I’m at. For example, I will mark row 10 of my work so when I need to count I can easily start there and I will move the stitch marker up as my work gets longer.
Two of my favorite stitch marker makers are The Hooking Reader and Nerdpreneur Creations.
The Hooking Reader even has a Stitch Marker Club. You can join the wait list here.
If you don’t own an acrylic ruler, do yourself a favor and buy one! It makes measuring so much easier! I love using my retractable tape measures on the go but if I am at home I will use my acrylic ruler every time. You don’t have to fight the tape to stay put or accidentally retract the tape when you finally got it where you want it. (It happens to me all the time!). You can find them at Walmart or any craft store in the sewing section. And of course you can find it on Amazon.
And last but not least, are Furls Crochet hooks and Clover bent tip tapestry needles.
I use Furls Crochet hooks exclusively. They have saved my hands and allow me to crochet for long periods of time without hand or wrist pain. I love metal tipped hooks so I primarily use their Odyssey line of hooks. When I am working with blanket yarn, I will use their Streamline Swirl hooks. Blanket yarn and metal hooks don’t always like each other so the streamline swirls are perfect.
The bent tip tapestry needles are a must for amigurumi projects. I also use them for closing up beanies and for blanket yarn projects. The bent tip just makes going in and out of stitches so must easier and faster. I prefer to use the Clover brand needles because they are super smooth.
Do we have any of the same favorites?

Thank you for sharing your talent and being “there”. It’s a nice change of pace and refreshing. Keep up the good work. I’ve been crocheting for 60 years and there’s always room to learn more 😀
