Free Crochet Pattern: Sunshine Mug Rug
One of the best things about crocheting is you can always find a project that fits your mood. Some days I just want a super, quick and easy crochet pattern that doesn’t require a lot of thought. The Sunshine Mug Rug is the one of those quick, easy crochet patterns.
These super cute Sunshine Mug Rugs are definitely binge-worthy. Are you a binge crocheter? I tend to do this with beanies and ear warmers. Once I make one, I will be making them for months. Now I can add these mug rugs to my crochet binge list. I seriously want to make them in every color!
The fringe is really fun, too. You can choose to use the same color to match your mug rug or take the colorful route like I do.
I use some of my hand dyed yarn scraps for the fringe because pops of color just make me happy.
Adding the fringe is really easy: I cut the yarn down to about 2 inches and then fold it in half. Using a smaller hook, I stick my hook through the edge of the rug and put the loop of yarn around my hook then gently pull it back through leaving the tails on the other side. Then I take the two tails of yarn and wrap them around the hook again and gently pull them through the loop. Give the yarn tails a gently tug and there is your fringe.
It takes me a bit longer to do the fringe because I like to dig through my yarn scraps and find different colors. I really take it to a whole new level. LOL

Notes
This pattern uses Standard US Terms.
You can easily adjust this pattern by chaining until you reach your desired size. Be sure your chain is an odd number.
You will be placing your SC into the HHDC from the previous row & your HHDC will be placed in the SC from the row round.
When working into your foundation chain, I prefer to work in the back bump.
My mug rugs measure 4 inches long by 3.5 inches wide before adding the fringe to them.
Special Stitch
Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC): Yarn over, insert your hook in to the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, pull that loop through the next loop on your hook (kind of like a slip stitch), this will leave you with two loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through both loops.
You can find my video tutorial on this stitch here.
Pattern
CH 17 (or an odd number)
