Whims Cowl Free Crochet Pattern

I have recently discovered a love for crocheting cowls.  They work up so quickly and I love to wear them. My Whims Cowl crochet pattern only uses 3 stitches throughout the pattern; The Elizabeth stitch, the linen stitch and the half double crochet stitch. The Elizabeth stitch and the linen stitch have such a nice textured look to them and I love designing crochet patterns that have texture. These 3 stitches complement each other well and I love the look that this combination gives this cowl.

I am so excited to be a part of the Furls Crochet 2020 Blog Hop. I love working with their Whims Merino yarn and enjoyed designing this Whims Cowl with it. I am already a huge lover of their Odyssey hooks and use them almost exclusively.

Their Merino yarn paired with my Furls Odyssey hook resulted in amazing stitch definition. Whims Merino yarn is so soft and has a nice bounce to it, which makes it wonderful to work with. The best part is that the yarn doesn’t unravel as you are crocheting.

This cowl works up pretty quickly and is easily adjustable it to fit any size that you need. I have a video tutorial to go along with the pattern so it is beginner friendly and will help those of you that are a visual learner like I am.

NOTES

This pattern uses American Standard Terms.

Be sure to count stitches after each row.

I made my cowl 32 inches long, but you can easily adjust this size to fit the size you want by FHDC an even number until you get to your desired length.

I worked the Elizabeth Stitch a little differently for this pattern. For the repeat rows of the Elizabeth Stitch, I place the Elizabeth Stitch in the CH 1 space from the previous row instead of the stitch made by the Elizabeth Stitch.

Normal linen stitch rows are an odd number of stitches. For this pattern, I added a single crochet at the beginning and the end of the linen stitch rows so there would be an even number of stitches for each row throughout the pattern. Each row should have the same number of stitches as your foundation row.

Row 6: Repeat Row 4. (NOTE: the ES is worked in the CH 1 space not in the stitch made by the Elizabeth Stitch.)

Row 7: Repeat Row 3.

Keep repeating Rows 1-7 (in order) until you reach 10 inches or your desired width.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Attach buttons in the style you prefer. There are many styles you can choose for adding your buttons to your cowl. I chose to lay my cowl out then fold one half inwards and fold the other half over it to make a point. Then added my buttons. There are some great YouTube video tutorials with different ways to do this. I lined my buttons up so they would go through one of the Elizabeth Stitch rows. When choosing buttons, make sure they will fit through the stitches unless you are just attaching them for decorative purposes and not for holding your cowl together.

SPECIAL STITCHES

LINEN STITCH (Linen ST)
This stitch is a repetition of a single crochet stitch and a chain one. To work a linen stitch you will single crochet, chain one and skip the next stitch. When working the next row of linen stitches you will be placing your single crochets in the chain one space from the previous row, not in the loops of the actual stitch. In other words, you will be single crocheting between the single crochets. The linen stitch is normally worked in an odd number of stitches so, for this pattern I added a single crochet at the beginning and the end of the linen stitch rows because the Elizabeth stitch calls for an even number of stitches. This allows the pattern to have the same number of stitches for each row.

ELIZABETH STITCH (ES)
Insert your hook in the next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, insert your hook back in the same stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all four loops, CH 1. (Watch my video tutorial.)
