This free crochet pattern is for a simple, quick and easy dishcloth made by using just two crochet stitches. Simple cotton dishcloths are my favorite go-to summertime crochet project. I designed this free crochet pattern while I was in dry, hot Arizona visiting my mom and I knew cotton yarn would be the best yarn to crochet with while it was so hot.
The two stitches used for this pattern are the single crochet stitch (SC) and the herringbone half double crochet stitch (HHDC).
Currently the HHDC stitch is my favorite stitch. I say currently because I go on crochet stitch binges until I get it out of my system and move on. I know I can’t be the only one who does this!
You can easily adjust the Sunshine Dishcloth pattern to make a blanket. A lot of the time I design patterns with dishcloths because I just don’t have the time to sit and crochet a blanket. And I really wish I had more time because I love to crochet blankets.
Notes:
You can easily adjust this pattern by chaining an even number. My CH 30 resulted in my dishcloth being 7.5 inches wide and I continued to alternate Rows 2 & 3 until my dishcloth was square (7.5 inches by 7.5 inches) because that is my preferred size.
You will be placing your SC into the HHDC from the previous row & your HHDC will be placed in the SC from the previous row.
CH Chain HHDC Herringbone half double crochet SC Single crochet ST Stitch
PATTERN:
CH 30 (or any even number).
Row 1: HHDC in 2nd CH from hook, *SC in next CH, HHDC in next CH*, repeat from *to* to the end of the Row, last ST in Row should be HHDC, CH 1, turn.
Row 2: SC in 1st ST, *HHDC in next ST, SC in next ST*, repeat from *to* to the end of the Row, CH 1, turn.
Row 3: HHDC in 1st ST, *SC in next ST, HHDC in next ST*, repeat from *to* to the end of the Row, CH 1, turn.
Continue to alternate Rows 2 & 3, in that order, until you reached your desired size.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
I hope you will enjoy this crochet pattern as much as I do. I would love to see your makes from this pattern. You can share pictures below or find me on social – Facebook or Instagram.

I actually made a few of these dishcloths for a friend for a gift last year right before the holidays. She loved them! I have already purchased the cotton colors I need to make some for my house as well. I can’t wait to be able to use them.
Just learned the herringbone half double and it’s my new favorite stitch! Gonna have to make a few of these for my kitchen to add some sunshine on this cold wintry days. 🥰
I love learning a new stitch (HHDC) – and I have never done that one before. What a perfect project to start! I can’t wait to find some cotton yarn and make some of these! My mom crocheted me some dishcloths a few years back and they are my favorites!
I love learning new stitches too! HHDC is now one of my favorite stitches 🙂 I love using crochet dishcloths and it’s even more special that your Mom made them!
This is really pretty – I’d almost hate to get them dirty! I’m a beginner, and have to purchase cotton yarn for this. How many yards of yarn does this pattern use?
Hey Camille! I am really not sure how many yards it uses, but the next time I make one I will figure it up for you! I know that I can get 2 whole dishcloths out of one small skein of cotton yarn. It has been a while since I’ve binged crocheted dishcloths but I am wanting to say that I can almost get 3 out of a skein of cotton. And welcome to the crochet world!! It is so much fun! Please let me know if you have any questions, I would love to help!
