The Oakleigh Headband : Free Pattern

The OakLeigh Headband pattern was designed because I have been crocheting baby items for several weeks now and I wanted a crochet headband that was simple, textured and styled for any age. I think crochet baby items are just the sweetest thing and I am so happy to share this free crochet headband pattern.

The OakLeigh headband is very versatile. You can adjust it for any size that you need and you can make it as wide as you want.

It’s a simple pattern alternating rows of single crochet stitches and Herringbone Half Double Crochet stitches.  The Half Double Crochet stitch is my favorite crochet stitch and Herringbone Half Double Crochet is a very close second. I just love the texture and the look of the Herringbone Half Double Crochet. It’s so classy.

The Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC) stitch is a beautifully, textured variation of the Half Double Crochet (HDC) Stitch.  To make the HHDC stitch:

Yarn over and insert your hook into the indicated stitch;

Yarn over and pull up a loop;

Pull that loop through the next loop on your hook (kind of like a slip stitch) this will leave two loops on your hook;

Yarn over again and pull through those two loops.

This stitch is just a slight variation from the HDC, the difference is pulling the first loop through the second loop in place of yarning over and pulling through all 3 loops.

After practicing this stitch a few times you will quickly get the hang of it. I also have a video tutorial for the herringbone half double crochet stitch.

Keep alternating Rounds 2 & 3 until you reach your desired width.
Be sure to end with the SC Round and for the last 2 STS in that Round you will SLST instead of SC.
Fasten off. Be sure to leave a really long tail so you can wrap it around to make the knot.

Making the knot: I wrap the starting tail and the ending tail around the headband a couple of times then tie them together tightly and make a double knot then I will wrap until I like the look of it. Then I will tie them together again. Double knot. Then weave the ends in under the knot and cut off the tail.
