Free Scrunchie Crochet Patterns

I love designing patterns and I have now designed 6 different free crochet patterns for hair scrunchies. These velvet hair scrunchies are quick and easy crochet projects. I think the hardest part is learning the tricks to crocheting with velvet yarn. I will share the tricks that I have learned with you so you can enjoy making them too.
I came up with this version of the hair scruchies when I was in my studio and found a tote bag with all my Bernat velvet yarns.  I remembered how much fun I had making my original patterns for velvet hair scrunchies (see my earlier blog in February), so I decided to make them a little differently than I did before.

For this version, instead of crocheting around the hair tie, I decided to crochet a rectangle. When finished, you just insert the corner of the rectangle into the hair tie, then single crochet the foundation row and the last row together to enclose the hair tie into the yarn.  This technique gives them a slightly different look than the other version and makes sewing the tail ends a lot easier.

Crocheting with velvet yarn can be a little tricky.  You will have to really work for your stitches if you don’t use the right hook.
Velvet yarn doesn’t play well with just any hook. I prefer to use a plastic hook and I’ve found that the Clover Amour hooks for thicker yarn and Velvet yarn play well together. The Clover Amour hooks are plastic but they have a coating on them that makes them really smooth. My Susan Bates metal hooks and the velvet yarn were not a good fit. They just didn’t like each other. I felt that had to really work for my stitches, which will throw your tension off.
The other tricky part to crocheting with velvet yarn is that it is harder to see your stitches. If you have trouble finding the stitch you need to work into, try “feeling” for the stitch. Learning to feel for my stitches has really made it easier for me to work with velvet yarn.
