Cotton washcloths are my go-to when I don’t have a lot of time to crochet because I can finish them pretty quickly, plus I really enjoy crocheting small and quick projects – nothing like the feeling of completing a crochet project for some instant gratification!
One of my go-to patterns for washcloths is the blanket stitch pattern. I made a few baby blankets using this stitch and thought it would make great washcloths too. I think it looks really nice and gives them a great texture.
When I’m washing dishes I will often grab one of these washcloths before I grab any of my other styles.
I’ve been using the same ones for several years and I can honestly say that this stitch has held up really well from the continual usage and being thrown regularly in the washer/dryer!
Using my pattern, I tried out two different brands of cotton yarn to see how they came out.
The bigger washcloth was made using Peaches & Creme cotton yarn (color mint). I used a bigger hook size (I9/5.5mm) because I’m a tight crocheter and this yarn is a little stiffer than others.
The washcloth ended up being about 8 inches by 8 inches. If you are a tight crocheter and experience trouble with your stitches being too tight, try going up a hook size – it’ll make a world of difference!
With this mint colored washcloth, I also tried something a little different….I put a single crochet in each stitch for my last row. At the time, I thought it would look nice, but I’m not a fan. I like the wavy edge look better so, I didn’t add that part into the pattern.
The other washcloth I made using the I Love This Cotton brand from Hobby Lobby.
I used a size H8/5mm hook because this yarn is really soft and glides easily over your hook.
The hook I’m using in the photo here is a Furls hook – my new favorite brand of hooks.
I quit using smaller yarn for a long time because I had trouble with my hands hurting, but now that I use Furls hooks, I can crochet for hours with no trouble!

I love this design. I have made several blankets with it but hadn’t thought of washcloths/dishcloths. I have made 2 now and love them…they look a little fancier than a lot of other dishcloth patterns so they will make great gifts. I am wondering if you have ever put a border on any? I can’t make up my mind if I should or not…just a simple one maybe?
Nicky
Hey Cindy! Thank you so much. I love making these and love the fancier look. I do not put borders on my washcloth or my blankets. I don’t know why. I just don’t care for the way it looks. I do think I should start adding the option for a border in my crochet patterns though because most people prefer it that way
I think a simple border would look nice and give you nice clean edges.

This was actually one of the first patterns of yours that I came across. My teenage and tweenage daughters love this design for their daily face washing cloths. I have a few I have made for washing dishes in the kitchen and I tweaked the pattern some to make a swiffer cover for quick clean ups on the wood floors.

I use this stitch for baby blankets as well.. It is easy, and you can work without looking at your hook. I use this also for most dishcloth / washcloths…. Will be trying rectangle prayer shawls with this stitch soon..

I just tried this pattern a week ago for dishcloths, I LOVE IT!!! It is my new favorite for dishcloths. I have made like a dozen already! The only tweak I did was I made the first and last row half double crochet. I am gonna make a few baby afghans in this pattern as well! Thank you!
Nicky
