My Favorite Crochet Hooks

My favorite crochet hooks, yes that’s right, hooks – plural because, I don’t just have one favorite. I use certain brands for certain types of yarn. Crochet hooks come in a variety of styles and sizes. I am going to share with you the ones that I love and recommend.

The very first hooks I purchased when I decided to try to learn to crochet again were the  Susan Bates Crystallites Crochet Hook set. The set included sizes L11, M13, N15, and P16. I bought these because I didn’t know any better. They are plastic hooks and I used them for many, many projects. The problem I had with them is that the handles were short and the end would rub my hand when I worked on big projects like blankets. These were good for small projects. I think they were an OK place to start but, knowing what I know now, I wish I would have invested in either a Susan Bates bamboo handle or a Clover Amour hook.

The very first set of hooks I ever owned were the Susan Bates Silvalume hooks. This set includes the hook sizes F, G, H, I, J and K.

I have had them for so long, I don’t even know where they came from, if I purchased them or, if someone gave them to me.

If you want to learn to crochet using smaller yarn and want to buy a set of hooks, this would be a good start.

I very rarely use any of the above mentioned hooks now. I would still recommend them to beginners because they are affordable and a great place to start. Both sets are less than $10 each.

Once I realized that this whole crochet thing was going to work for me, I decided to invest in some different hooks. Don’t do like I did and fall for the whole set of no-named generic hooks with a pouch for $9.99 on eBay. It was a waste of money. The hooks grabbed the yarn and were just terrible to work with. Just buy one hook at a time, I bought my most commonly used size hook and then I would slowly buy other sized hooks when needed. Amazon has 2 day shipping so you won’t have to wait long or if you are lucky enough to live close to a craft store you can just grab one when you need it. There really is no need in spending $50 on a set when you may never use those sizes. Trust me, you want to save some money for the most important thing – the YARN!!!

The following brands of crochet hooks are what I use now.  Susan Bates, Clover Amour, and Furls. Why do I have so many different brands of hooks? Is one hook brand not enough? Well, is one pair of shoes enough!?!  LOL!!   I use different brands of hooks for different projects and yarn types.

Susan Bates

Susan Bates bamboo handled hooks and soft handled hooks- I will always be a Susan Bates fan. I have zero complaints about this brand of hooks. Every single one I’ve bought has been great and has held up for years.

I cannot even count how many hooks of this brand that I own. I had to invest in the ergonomic handles because my hands would cramp with the regular hooks. I like to use these hooks for cotton yarn and worsted weight yarn. I did use them for bulky weight yarn until I found the Clover Amour brand. I also have a few Susan Bates hooks with clay handles that are made by Polymer Clay Shed. Check them out on Facebook or Etsy. She has the prettiest handles and they are so smooth. I would love to have one of her hooks in every size.  As a creative small business owner, I love to buy from other creatives.

These hooks are great for working with bulky weight yarns. The first one I bought was a size N/P 10mm. I loved it so much that I eventually built up to having sizes K thru Q. The reason I love these hooks is the yarn slides effortlessly over the hooks and the rubber handles are very comfortable. I even have 2 smaller hooks in this brand and some duplicates in the bigger sizes. Yes, they are that amazing.

Furls Odyssey

I love, love these hooks. Furls Odyssey is a new brand for me. I currently only own two because these are the most expensive out of the brands I listed and I’m on a budget. I love using these for making beanie hats with worsted weight yarn.

I will eventually buy a size to use with bulky weight yarns, but for now I will stick with my beloved Clover Amour for them.

Those brands are my tried and true brands that I use daily. To be completely honest, I have a list of brands that I would love to try and will probably invest in one day. Hey, crochet hooks are an essential tool and you can never have enough. At least this is what I tell myself when I really want another hook.

As you can tell, I worked my way up to using ergonomic handles because they allowed me to crochet faster and for longer periods of time. I highly recommend to start out using ergonomic handled hooks because it will keep your hands from cramping and hurting like mine did when I first started crocheting.

My best advice when it comes to buying crochet hooks is to just buy one in the size you need for your project or in the size you use the most. That way if you don’t like it you are not stuck with a whole set.

There are few hooks I do not recommend for beginners. The first that come to mind are the wooden hooks. I know they look so nice and classy but in reality the yarn doesn’t glide over them as smoothly as metal or plastic hooks. I use my wood hooks for projects that I want to do slowly because I feel like they pull the yarn and make you work harder for your stitches.

My hope is that this post was helpful for you and will help you find the right hook for you.
What brand of crochet hooks do you use?
Is there a brand that I didn’t mention that you think I should try?

Happy Hookin’!

This post is my own personal opinion and is not sponsored by any of the companies mentioned.
These brands are all brands that I have purchased and used.

I have my favourite hooks for certain projects too, but I’ve not invested in any furls yet. I do have a clover that I use for my blankets as it just sits better in my hand. I keep telling my other half that one can never have too many hooks just as he believes that he can never have too many sets of darts!

LOL. I know what you mean. You can never have too many hooks. Furls are not for everyone but they have really helped my hands. I use them almost exclusively now.

I love this because I am always scrolling through hook after hook trying to figure out what I should choose! It shouldn’t be THAT hard! Thank you for your expertise!

What an interesting read, we always chat a lot about our favourite yarns but we cannot create without the hooks! I use ergonomic hooks, but have recently developed lymphoedema so I’m contemplating making my own handles to suit the swelling so I can crochet for longer periods

I did not realize how important hooks were until I started having trouble with my hands hurting and cramping. I now use the Furls hooks almost exclusively. I have made my own handles before with clay and it was a lot of fun. I think if I would have kept practicing I would have really liked my hooks better, but I always seemed to be rushed when I made them. There are some great YouTube tutorials for making your own handles. I hope you will find something to help your hands! 🙂
